10-man Real Madrid slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat at Levante Sunday with a second half goal from Arouna Kone settling a scrappy match.
Arch-rivals Barcelona had put on an eight-goal show against Osasuna 24 hours earlier, but Real were unable to match them after their task was made harder by the dismissal of Sami Khedira for a second yellow card.
Kaka missed an early chance and Karim Benzema looked a danger, but Real lacked a real goal threat as Jose Mourinho rested Cristiano Ronaldo.
But with their 100 per cent record at stake he brought on the Portuguese star for the second half only for him to make little impression.
Promoted Levante grew more confident and Kone smashed the ball home in the 68th minute for the only goal of the game.
Defeat leaves Real a point behind Barcelona and three adrift of early La Liga leaders Valencia.
In Germany, Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win at Schalke put the Bavarian giants back to the top of the Bundesliga Sunday.
Bayern are two points clear of Werder Bremen after six rounds.
Goals from new Bayern signing Nils Petersen and Germany midfielder Thomas Mueller in each half sunk the Royal Blues.
Champions Borussia Dortmund continued to struggle after a 2-1 defeat to Hanover, their third loss in six games.
Japan winger Shinji Kagawa put Dortmund ahead just after the hour mark but goals from Hanover captain Karim Haggui and Ya Konan in the last three minutes gave Hanover a shock win.
Turin giants Juventus lead Italy’s Serie A after a 1-0 win at Siena Sunday to make it two wins from two.
Alessandro Matri scored Juve’s winner nine minutes into the second half.
Udinese also made it two wins from two as they beat Fiorentina 2-0 at the Stadio Friuli.
Antonio Di Natale with a penalty and Mauricio Isla scored their goals.
