From iron lady to green giant —
The Eiffel Tower as it would look over time with 600,000 plants growing on it.
'La dame de fer' —
Nicknamed "la dame de fer", or "iron lady," the Eiffel Tower is located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, and was named after its designer and engineer Gustave Eiffel.
Building begins, 1887 —
Construction works for France's most famous building in July 1887. Built for the 1889 World Fair, the tower was only intended to last 20 years. It was saved by its indispensable use as a radio and telecommunications transmitter.
Chinese New Year —
Ginger's proposal to drape the tower in plants wouldn't be the first time it has taken on a new look. In 2004 the tower was bathed in red light to mark the Chinese New Year.
EU Presidency —
In 2008, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in blue with gold stars, representing the EU flag, to mark the staunchly pro-European nation's EU presidency.

Anniversary celebrations —
The tower transformed into a spectacular beacon of red white and blue in October 2009, celebrating its 120th anniversary year.
Bastille Day —
Fireworks burst over the Eiffel Tower, which is itself aglow with lights, during traditional Bastille Day celebrations on July 14, 2011.
