Final farewell —
Fabio Capello leaves Wembley Stadium after his hour-long meeting with Football Association chairman David Bernstein, where he tendered his resignation with immediate effect.
Pearce could step in —
Capello's assistant is former England defender Stuart Pearce, who could take over as manager in a caretaker capacity in the wake of the Italian's departure.
Redknapp favorite for role —
The overwhelming favorite to take over from Capello is Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who was cleared of tax evasion charges at a London court on the same day as the England manager resigned.
Capello takes charge —
Capello was appointed England manager in December 2007 after coaching huge clubs such as Real Madrid, Roma, Juventus and AC Milan.
Swiss success —
The Italian's first game in charge was a friendly international against Switzerland at Wembley in February 2008, with England winning 2-1.

Terry stripped of captaincy —
Capello stripped Chelsea's John Terry of the England captaincy in February 2010 after newspaper allegations about his private life. Terry was reinstated as captain in 2011.
South Africa nightmare —
After a strong qualifying campaign England had a nightmare World Cup in South Africa in 2010, winning just one game and being knocked out in the second round by a young and enterprising Germany side.
