Manchester United don't usually spend money in the January transfer window, but well off the pace in the race for a Champions League spot $61 million has been forked out to sign Juan Mata from Chelsea.

Chelsea have had a busy window. Some of the Mata money -- $34.7 million -- was spent on re-signing Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic. The 25-year-old left Stamford Bridge for Portugal three years ago as part of the deal to bring David Luiz to Stamford Bridge from Benfica.

Winger Kevin de Bruyne was another player to exit Stamford Bridge. The Belgian joined German club Wolfsburg for a reported $27 million on a five-year contract.

But Chelsea weren't the only club active in the January window. English Premier League team Newcastle and French club Paris St-Germain agreed a fee of around $33 million for France midfielder Yohan Cabaye and he made his debut in a 2-0 win over Bordeaux on the final day of the window.
