"Some protesters have been throwing rocks and bottles and shooting fireworks at police, who respond with plastic pellets, water cannons and copious amounts of tear gas," he says.

Police charge along the streets. "The sad thing is, in 2012 the Turkish government allowed labor unions and leftist parties to hold a rally in Istanbul's Taksim Square," says Watson. "That was a peaceful May Day attended by tens of thousands. For the last two years, the state has banned rallies there and the result has been violence, riots and police crackdown."
