Wild Thing —
Daly's often controversial private life -- he was banned for six months by the PGA in 2008 -- also endeared him to fans and he has had well-documented problems with alcohol and gambling.

PGA champion —
Daly burst onto the scene in 1991, winning the PGA Championship after only earning a place at the last minute as ninth alternate. He won by three shots and became an overnight sensation. Many people who had never watched golf before tuned in as a result.

Rocca and roll —
Daly's second major title came in 1995 when he won the British Open at St Andrew's in Scotland. He beat Constantino Rocca into second place after the Italian had holed a miraculous 60-foot putt on the final hole to force a playoff.

Diamond in the rough? —
Daly was last in contention to add to his haul of tournament wins in 2005 but was defeated by Tiger Woods in a playoff at a World Golf Championships event. He only has two top 10 finishes to his name since 2006 and relies on exemptions and sponsors invitations these days.

Loud trousers —
Daly is in partnership with Loudmouth Golf and has become renowned for the jaunty gear he wears out on the golf course.
