Ireland sparked wild celebrations in Nelson, New Zealand, as they pulled off the first shock of this Cricket World Cup against West Indies.

West Indies had posted a total of 304 runs thanks to a century by Lendl Simmons, nephew of the Ireland cricket coach Phil.

But the Irish players were all smiles at the end of their rivals' innings, given their history of run chases past the 300-mark in World Cup cricket.

There was a large pocket of Irish fans present for the game, many of them in colorful costume for the game.

Younger members too got in the spirit for Ireland's third World Cup appearance.

Ed Joyce, who formerly played for England, produced the most captivating innings as a host of Irish batsmen made their mark on the game.

And Niall O'Brien was similarly free flowing as he finished his quick-scoring innings on 79 not out.

It was left to John Mooney (left) to hit the winning runs as he had done in a surprise win over England at the last World Cup.

Darren Sammy fronted up to the media in the aftermath, left to ponder what might have been with his side seemingly in disarray on and off the field.

Meanwhile, Irish celebrations continued long into the day and night following another memorable victory.
