Carlo Ancelotti guided Real Madrid to its 10th European title last season -- the fabled "La Decima" -- yet it wasn't enough for the Italian to keep his job.

Ancelotti's contract at the Spanish club was due to expire in 2016 but the former Chelsea boss did not get the chance to see the deal out.

Ancelotti and Real recorded a much-needed win over local rival Atletico Madrid as Javier Hernandez scored the winner to send the club through to the Champions League semifinals.

It was the first time Real had beaten Atletico this season after eight attempts -- a record that helped to pile the pressure on Ancelotti.

Real Madrid has a history of dismissing its coaches, but former president Ramon Calderon told CNN he thought Ancelotti would see out his contract.
