French police are looking for 17 rare and endangered monkeys that were stolen over the weekend from the Beauval Zoo, south of Paris.

Thieves carried away the wooden boxes the monkeys were sleeping in, zoo director Rodolphe Delord said.

Among the monkeys stolen from Beauval Zoo Saturday night were 10 silvery Marmosets, authorities say.

Also stolen from the Beauval Zoo, south of Paris, were seven golden lion tamarins, zoo officials said.

Thieves cut the fence in the primate habitat and covered a security camera before making off with the 17 endangered monkeys, zoo director Rodolphe Delord said.

The animals must be found quickly, Delord said, because they need specialized care. Authorities fear the monkeys may have been taken to sell on the black market.
