Simona Halep made last year's final at the French Open, but she won't be in this year's final. The third-seeded Romanian was upset in straight sets by Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Lucic-Baroni hadn't beaten a player in the top 50 this season prior to the French Open.

But the world No. 70 had ousted Halep before, at last year's U.S. Open. The 33-year-old's celebration Wednesday mirrored what she did in New York: She raised her arms and dropped her racket.

Indeed it was a day for the veterans. Benjamin Becker, nearly 34, upset clay-court veteran Fernando Verdasco 10-8 in the fifth set. Becker had never won a match at the French Open before this year.

French wildcard Nicolas Mahut, 33, upset 2014 semifinalist Ernests Gulbis in four sets. Mahut celebrated by kissing his girlfriend.

The enigmatic Gulbis slipped to 3-13 in 2015 after a fine 2014.

Gilles Muller, 32 and a former junior No. 1, completed a five-set comeback win over Paolo Lorenzi.

Roger Federer is a veteran, too. But not just any veteran. Federer progressed comfortably in straight sets, defeating Marcel Granollers.

Maria Sharapova, who battled past Halep in the 2014 final, didn't linger, needing just 80 minutes to fend off fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko.

Among other winners Wednesday was Federer's pal, Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka, bottom right, signed autographs post match.
