Heather Watson gave world No. 1 Serena Williams all she could handle at Wimbledon on Friday. She led 3-0 in the third set.

It was looking like that kind of day for Williams, who had also struggled in patches at the French Open. Watson had a chance to serve out the third round match.

But Williams is hard to put away, and she proved it once again, winning the third set 7-5. The "Serena Slam" and the calendar-year slam are thus still possibilities.

Williams clinched victory with a fierce backhand that caught the line on Center Court. Watson challenged but was proved incorrect.

But Watson competed well in front of her home crowd. The fans -- and Williams -- applauded her as she left tennis' most famous court.

Up next for Williams is older sister Venus, who had no such troubles Friday. She crushed Aleksandra Krunic.

Serena leads Venus 14-11 in their head-to-heads but Venus won their last encounter one year ago in Montreal.

Their last meeting at a grand slam came at Wimbledon in 2009, when Serena beat Venus in straight sets in the final.
