The Kansas City Royals are returning to the World Series after defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Friday.

The Royals won the best-of-seven American League Championship Series with a game to spare, four to two.

Bleacher Report: Reaction to the Royals’ Game 6 win

Kansas City, last year’s American League pennant winner, will meet the New York Mets in the World Series. Game 1 is Tuesday night in Kansas City.

Rain delayed the game in the eighth inning, when the score was tied 3-3 and a band of clouds passed over Kauffman Stadium. Tarp was rolled out onto the field.

When the game resumed, the winning hit came off of the bat of Eric Hosmer, who shot a single-base hit down the edge of right field.

Winning run

That was just enough to give Lorenzo Cain the time he needed to race from first base around to home plate. Cain slid in for the winning run right as Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki’s throw slapped into the catcher’s mitt.

On Wednesday night, the Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-3 at Wrigley Field, sweeping the National League Championship Series and squarely landing their World Series slot.

The Mets move on to the World Series for the fifth time – and the first since 2000.

Some history was made, too. Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy became the first player in the Major Leagues to hit a home run in six straight postseason games, when he smashed one off of Cubs pitcher Fernando Rodney.
