Rory McIlroy carded a four-under-par 68 in the first round of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai to leave him tied 16th.

The Northern Irishman had been a doubt to compete in the tournament after suffering food poisoning in the lead up, which caused him to pull out of the pro-am event Wedesnday.

The four-time major winner had earlier tweeted that a dodgy club sandwich sent with room service in a Shanghai hotel had been the cause of his illness.

McIlroy revealed he lost 10lbs in just 48 hours prior to the competition. "(I weigh) 150lbs, 68 kilos. I can't remember the last time I was this light," he said. "I think it is more a case of re-hydration now. Or a few burgers maybe, I don't know."

South African Branden Grace is currently top of the leaderboard after shooting a nine-under-par round of 63.
