Honduras international soccer player Arnold Peralta was shot dead outside of a shopping mall Thursday while on holiday in his home country, officials said.

Peralta earned 26 caps for his country and played at the London 2012 Olympics where his team earned a shock 1-0 win over Spain.

The defensive midfielder played over 20 times for Scottish club Rangers during an 18 month spell and helped it win the League One title in 2014. The club said it was "deeply shocked and saddened" to learn of his death.

"Our thoughts go out to Arnold's family and friends at this very difficult time," a Rangers statement read. "The club will pay its respects with a minute's silence before Saturday's game against Morton. The players will also wear black armbands in his honour."

"We won't rest until those responsible for this act are identified and detained so that they can face justice," the Honduras government said.
