Dettori was crowned "World's Best Jockey" at a ceremony in Hong Kong on December 11. His five victories, four second places and four third places earned him 100 points -- 10 more than Triple Crown winning jockey Victor Espinoza and Britain's defending champion Ryan Moore.

The Longines-sponsored "World's Best Jockey" is decided using the results from 100 Group 1 or Grade 1 races held all over the world. Along with his Derby and Arc triumphs, Dettori won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Ascot (pictured), the Eclipse Stakes run at Sandown Park and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Speaking to CNN in August, Dettori said a good jockey is able to get into the mind of the racehorse. "To have a rapport throughout (a horse's) life is very satisfying. You've built a relationship with that horse and you enjoy great experiences together by winning."

Dettori's most-cherished achievement is winning all seven races at Ascot in September 1996. "It's never been done before in 300 years of horse racing and it was done on a huge day," Dettori told CNN. For me (being a jockey) is like going on stage -- I come alive. I embrace it, it's part of my life."
