American 100-footer Comanche suffered a blow to its hopes when a broken daggerboard led to damage of its steering system, which the crew repaired at sea on Saturday after briefly retiring from the race.

The prestigious Australian race attracted 108 entries this year, but more than 30 pulled out due to difficult weather conditions.

Another U.S. entry, Rambler, led the 628-nautical-mile event from Comanche on Saturday night local time before it also suffered damage and dropped back to second place.

When Comanche arrived at the port of Hobart on the island of Tasmania, Australian supermaxi Ragamuffin was in third place close behind Rambler.

Defending champion and eight-time line honors winner Wild Oats XI returned to Sydney on Saturday after tearing a mainsail.

Italian debutant Maserati, which hit a buoy in the harbor start, recovered to be fourth once out in open seas.

Maserati's crew includes Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover -- a member of Monaco's royal family.

Home entry Perpetual Loyal included members of Australia's sporting royalty in its crew, including ex-rugby league star Anthony Minichello, former national cricket captain Michael Clarke, TV presenter Erin Molan and rugby union player Kurtley Beale. The yacht was forced to retire on Sunday due to a broken rudder.
