Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova to reach Australian Open quarterfinals

Serena Williams extended her winning streak over Maria Sharapova to a staggering 18 matches following her 6-4 6-1 victory in the Australian Open quarterfinals.

The Russian started the match brightly, breaking her American opponent and taking a 2-0 lead in the first set. However, Williams rallied to break back and eventually take the first set.

The world No. 1 was forced to see the tournament doctor twice and was given a fruit bar. Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou told reporters she felt dizzy and Williams herself admittied she had suffered food poisoning just days earlier.

"It's obviously always frustrating," Sharapova told reporters of her losing streak against Williams. "I mean, it's motivating. It's motivating because she's at a different level. That's inspiring."

"Something about her game," Williams said when asked about her success against Sharapova. "I like the way she hits the ball. When I play better, when I'm forced to play better, I don't know, I do well."
