Britain's most famous horse race, the Grand National, kicks off this Saturday in Liverpool. The three-day racing festival includes "Ladies Day" -- also known as "Fabulous Friday" -- where the UK's finest frocks and highest heels come out to play.

First run in 1839, the steeplechase race sees 40 horses and jockeys jump 30 fences in a little over four miles (six kilometers). Here, racegoers make their own entrance onto the Aintree racecourse.

With a prize pool of around £1 million ($1.4 million), it is also one of the richest horse races in Europe.

On "Ladies Day," the second day of the festival, the fashion stakes are similarly high -- the most stylish racegoer will take home a Range Rover worth £35,000 ($49,000) and another £8,000 ($11,000) worth of prizes from shopping complex Liverpool ONE.

Female jockey Katie Walsh's one piece of fashion advice for "Ladies Day" racegoers? "Sensible shoes," she said. "There is no point having shoes you do not feel comfortable in. Shoes are key for any outfit, if you can't walk in them then your whole outfit and appearance is affected. You need to be realistic; it is a long day of racing, so sensible shoes are a must."
