Portugal upset France 1-0 in Euro 2016 finals
Young Portuguese fan consoles sobbing France supporter
Portugal’s shocking upset in the Euro 2016 championship proved to be too much for one devastated French fan. But he got support from a surprising source — a young Portugal supporter.
The video shows a France fan – a grown man, mind you – sobbing after his team lost. The boy, who was about a foot shorter, reached up and took the man’s hand and said something that seemed to cheer the man up.
The man smiled, gave a thumbs up and bent over to kiss the boy on the top of his New York Yankees cap. The boy patted the fan on the arm as they walked off and the man stopped to give him another hug.
We don’t know who the boy is, or where he got the Yankees hat, but the video has enchanted fans. The clip has almost nine million views on Facebook as of Monday morning.
“I was so angry that Portugal won, but I literally cannot be anymore. Not when there are people like this little boy who love the game and [it seems] love life,” one fan wrote on Facebook.
“Got me teary-eyed … So beautiful. This is what football should be about, not clashes between fans,” another fan wrote.
A Portuguese commenter was as proud of the little boy as he was of his team.
“A (very) young Portuguese representing the best of an entire people. Viva Portugal!,” he said.
It was Portugal’s first European Championship.
