Nice forward Mario Balotelli celebrates with local supporters at the end of a French Ligue 1 football match in May. The striker dons a T-shirt which spells out the names of the 86 victims of the July 14, 2016 terror attack in the shape of a heart. The shirts were sold to raise money for the victims' families.

OGC Nice has a very close relationship with its fans and displayed symbols of support for victims of the attack from the first day of last season, on August 14, 2016. "The atmosphere was unreal," says longtime supporter Frederic Colombo. "Thirty-five thousand people were in the stadium in the memory of the victims. It was beyond football."

Nice supporters in the grandstand held white placards in tribute to the victims of the Bastille Day attack in Nice on the club's opening day last August. "The club helped a lot after the attacks," says Nice native and club supporter Colombo.

Nice's Brazilian defender Dante joined the team one month after the attack in July 2016. "We can help a little bit with the way we play on the field, bringing joy to supporters or bringing joy to people who lost their families," he told CNN. "We've tried to bring more happiness to the city, I think it's important."

OGC Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère (second from left) marches with city leaders at a club rally in 2013. "We all live in Nice, we have all been impacted directly or indirectly, and we cannot imagine that this could happen in a place like that at this moment, with children and women, it's terrible," Rivère told CNN.

"I think that during the whole year, we have been able to give smiles and joy to people and pride in our city," says Rivère. Nice had one of its best seasons in 2016-2017, finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League preliminary stages.
