Hello from CNN I'm Jo Beck with the 5 things you need to know for Tuesday, September 24th.
00:00:08
U.S. officials are working desperately to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah from spiraling into an all out regional war. Yesterday was the deadliest day in Lebanon in almost two decades as officials in the country say Israeli airstrikes killed almost 500 people, including women and children. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged civilians to, quote, "get out of harm's way" and evacuate areas where the Israeli military is targeting Hezbollah.

Hezbollah fired multiple rocket barrages into northern Israel overnight and has vowed to retaliate. U.S. officials say they believe Israel has significantly weakened the militant group and they're now trying to convince the country's leaders not to escalate the fighting further or launch a ground incursion into Lebanon.

Former President Donald Trump has been focusing his attention on his economic policies. He's been warning farmers in the swing state of Pennsylvania that if he loses the election, they, quote, "won't have a farm very long." He made the comments at a campaign event yesterday where he promised to protect rural Americans from the perceived predatory power of China. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris is weighing up a potential trip to the US southern border this week in the battleground state of Arizona. CNN's Priscila Alvarez says the Harris campaign is trying to close the gap with Trump on the issue of immigration.

Campaign officials say for her to deliver her message on this issue, one where she has been talking about her work as attorney general, tackling transnational gangs, but also saying that the former president is unserious about the border for taking that bipartisan border bill.

NORAD says it detected four Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska. The organization said the aircraft did not enter American or Canadian airspace, saying the activity, quote, occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat. But this latest incident comes less than two weeks after U.S. soldiers were deployed to the area amid an increase in Russian and Chinese military exercises in the region. And Russian aircraft have been detected several times this month.

They perpetuated the lie, the myth that recycling of plastics, including single use plastics is sustainable, is good for the environment.

The state's attorney general announced the lawsuit yesterday, which accuses the company of using slick marketing and misleading public statements for half a century to claim recycling was an effective way to deal with plastic pollution.
CA Attorney General Rob Bonta (soundbite)
00:03:13
They knew from day one that that was not possible. Only about 5% of plastics is recycled. 95% is not. Most ends up in our waterways, our environment, our landfills, or is incinerated.

00:03:27
But ExxonMobil has pointed the finger back at California, saying the state has an ineffective recycling system that officials have known about for decades and are now looking to blame others.
00:03:39
Coming up, an execution is set to go ahead today, even though a prosecutor says the man could be innocent.
00:03:50
Despite a prosecutor saying Marcellus Williams may be innocent. The 55 year old is set to be executed in Missouri later today unless the U.S. Supreme Court puts a stop to it. Williams was convicted in the 1998 killing of Felicia Gayle. But in January, the county's top prosecutor filed a motion to vacate his conviction and sentence, which was denied. Recently, prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell teamed up with Williams's lawyers to file a joint brief. It asked the state Supreme Court to send the case back to a lower court for a, quote, "more comprehensive hearing," saying there was new information about potential evidence contamination. But at a hearing yesterday, the court unanimously decided the execution should go ahead.
