Let’s face it, folks: Anti-chafing products may not be the sexiest of skin care topics, but it’s definitely worth covering considering what a struggle chafing can be come summertime. The fact is that so many of us deal with this uncomfortable skin affliction — especially during the summer months when sweating is inevitable — but the good news is there are several different ways to prevent and treat it. Ahead, we tapped two dermatologists for their expert insight on this common skin issue, including their top anti-chafing product recommendations. So, let’s dive in, shall we?
What is thigh chafing?
“Thigh chafing is a common skin irritation caused by the inner thighs rubbing against each other, leading to redness, discomfort and sometimes sores,” says Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City and New Jersey. “Chafing often arises during physical activities or in hot, humid weather, as increased sweating increases friction.”
Dr. Miriam Hanson, a board-certified dermatologist based in Austin, Texas, adds that chafing is caused from repetitive friction between skin or clothing. “Several factors contribute to chafing, including moisture, ill-fitting clothing, physical activity, skin folds, heat and humidity,” she says. “It commonly occurs on the chest, under the arms, [the] buttocks and the inner thighs.”
Best clothing to avoid chafing
When it comes to preventing chafing, choosing the right clothing can be a serious game changer, as it can aid in protecting your skin against the repetitive friction that causes it. “Choose sweat-wicking, breathable fabrics that keep moisture away from the skin,” Garshick says. “Compression shorts or thigh bands are also effective, as they provide a smooth surface to help minimize friction.”
Hanson also highly recommends opting for quick-dry fabrics and cooling clothing. “This will help with chafing because they wick away sweat and help minimize the moisture on the skin,” she says. Many workout and outdoor brands, such as Lululemon and REI, have a variety of quick-dry bike shorts options to choose from, or you can look specifically for anti-chafe shorts.
Associate fashion and beauty editor Sophie Shaw says that these cooling shorts are perfect for combatting chub rub on hot, sweaty days. They're made with a super-lightweight performance fabric that is wicks away sweat.
Per Garshick's advice, thigh bands can also give you coverage just in the spots where you need it most. These top-rated ones are unisex and can be worn under shorts, skirts and dresses to protect against chafing.
If you experience chafing on the chest or underarms, having a lightweight, form-fitting shirt should help. The key is to have a fitted top so there's less skin-on-skin contact, and loose fabrics can also cause uncomfortable rubbing and friction.
Best anti-chafing skin care products
“Anti-chafe products that act as a lubricant in the areas that rub will allow you to exercise and be active without worrying about developing this painful and irritating condition,” Hanson says. “As a general rule, I look for products that do not contain fragrance, perfumes or other preservatives that can further irritate the skin by inducing allergic or irritant contact reactions.”
Hanson and Garshick are both huge advocates of Body Glide. “This fragrance-free balm forms an invisible, dry barrier to protect the skin and can be applied anywhere there may be potential for friction including the thighs, groin, neck, arms, feet and chest area,” Garshick says. “The long-lasting, portable formula can be used daily or just prior to an activity such as running or hiking, and it is both sweat and water-resistant.”
Hanson adds that it’s her ultimate favorite product for chafing prevention: “It uses all plant-based ingredients and is a nongreasy, lightweight product that helps repel water and reduce friction.”
Another favorite from Hanson, this ultra-nourishing cream from Skinfix contains soothing colloidal oatmeal, along with other skin-loving ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, allantoin and a blend of plant oils. “This steroid-free cream reduces itch and overall discomfort by repairing the skin’s barrier,” Hanson says. “It is allergy tested and free from the most common allergens.”
A top recommendation from Garshick, this fan-favorite formula from Megababe is an award-winner for a reason: “This transparent, easy-to-use formula glides on effortlessly and includes aloe and vitamin E to help soothe the skin, as well as pomegranate seed extract to protect and grape-seed oil to help hydrate,” Garshick says. In addition to thighs, it’s also excellent for arms, bra lines and other sensitive areas that need some extra TLC.?
“Formulated with shea butter and colloidal oatmeal, this anti-chafe stick glides on easily to create a protective barrier while also soothing the skin,” Garshick says of First Aid Beauty’s bestselling balm. “It’s also fragrance-free, making it a great option even for those with very sensitive skin.”
Petrolatum is the star ingredient in this ultra-soothing, fragrance-free body balm, which works to heal and repair the skin — even in hard-to-reach areas. “Providing an occlusive barrier, it helps to lock moisture and protect the skin from irritation,” Garshick says. “I love that it is easy to use on-the-go and is also a great option to prevent chafing.”
Made with moisture-absorbing plant extracts and cornstarch, this wand helps keep you dry and comfortable. Shaw recommends it specifically for friction points that are prone to sweating, like the area under your breasts or the inner thighs.
File this under one of the most affordable and effective anti-chafing options on the market. “This is a non-greasy unscented option that helps to reduce irritation and chafing, while also deeply moisturizing the skin,” Garshick says. It contains a blend of hero ingredients like aloe vera, zinc oxide and vitamin E, which work in tandem to nourish, protect and soothe fragile skin.
“While more often thought of for diaper rash, this zinc-based cream can also help to prevent chafing by serving as a barrier cream,” Garshick says. On top of 40% zinc oxide, this fast-working formula also contains a powerhouse blend of petrolatum, cod liver oil, glycerin, beeswax and vitamin E. Plus, it comes in a huge tub that will last you ages.
