The past year was pretty interesting on many fronts, especially when it came to makeup. Many of 2023’s makeup trends were food-centric — among latte, strawberry and wine makeup (and others), the buzziest looks were reminiscent of coffee and wine bar menus.

Looking to the year ahead, our makeup routines are due for a refresh.?Luckily, professional makeup artists are predicting that the makeup trends of 2024 will be fresher and much simpler. This coming year will be all about embracing natural beauty by giving your skin its moment on center stage, embracing fluffier undone brows and keeping glam moments soft and delicate.

We tapped four celebrity makeup artists to share what they anticipate will be the top eight makeup trends of the year. Each of these moments have the potential to go completely viral, and New York-based makeup artist Andrea DiSabatino warns to brace yourself for the inevitable surge of sold-out products as a result. But you can get ahead of the madness and rock the trends before they become cool. Ahead, discover how to create the top makeup trends of 2024 by following our step-by-step guides and shopping the products we’ve carefully curated to achieve each wow-worthy look.

All about skin

Over the past few years, we’ve seen people ditching their full-coverage foundation and choosing to bare a fresh face, either going completely makeup-free or opting for skin tints and serums. According to three of our experts, this trend will continue to flourish this coming year. “If celebrities like Pamela Anderson are embracing their natural skin, it’s likely to influence beauty trends,” says DiSabatino. “In 2024, I think we will see an even greater emphasis on celebrating and showcasing natural skin.”

?Celebrity makeup artist Deanna Paley says that skin tints and serums are “lightweight, don’t feel cakey and also have good-for-your-skin ingredients and benefits.” One of her top picks is this foundation-serum hybrid from MAC that comes in a whopping 54 shades and contains 33 skincare ingredients, including 10% hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated for up to 12 hours.?

Paley also loves this ultra-hydrating Danessa Myricks skin tint. Available in 16 flexible shades, the lightweight formula diminishes the look of redness, uneven skin and blotchiness both immediately and over time, and leaves skin looking naturally glowy. “The buildable formula allows the look of a fresh face but still provides the coverage we want,” she says.?

“For a flawless base, I love Glossier's Perfecting Skin Tint [because] it melts into the skin,” says DiSabatino. Although it provides sheer coverage, it beautifully evens out discoloration and blurs the look of pores while imparting a dewy finish.?

Along with leaving a radiant, dewy sheen on your complexion, this multitasking skin tint infuses skin with a slew of skincare ingredients. Squalane and hyaluronic acid intensely hydrate, while niacinamide smooths skin texture. Additionally, you get an extra boost of sun protection with SPF 40.?

Cream products

Incorporating cream blushes, bronzers, highlights and eyeshadows goes hand in hand with the natural skin trend. These types of products melt into the complexion and can give the illusion of a no-makeup makeup look. Celebrity makeup artist Cara Lovello has already started to integrate more cream products into her routine, and she thinks that they’ll really explode in 2024. “Layer little by little until you’re happy with the depth of your contour or magnitude of the blush,” Lovello says. “And [remember to] set with powder.”

A favorite of Lovello, this multitasking blush from Tower 28 can also be used as a lip color. When used on cheeks it leaves a gorgeous, healthy sheen. Plus, it’s extremely easy to blend — it becomes part of your skin with just a few taps.?

This captivating, swirled cream-gel bronzer provides an enviable sun-kissed glow in seconds. You get a lot of product for the price: The compact is massive, and after almost a year of regular use, I’ve barely made a dent.?

Swipe this tiny cream highlighter along the high points of your face to add a touch of radiance to your cheekbones, brow bones, and nose. The translucent formula is made without glitter for a more natural-looking finish.?

While cream shadows are notorious for creasing, you won’t experience that with this longwear stick from Laura Mercier. The pigment-rich eyeshadows are completely crease-, transfer- and smudge-resistant. Simply glide it along your eyes and blend for a seamless, high-impact smoky eye.?

A major blush moment

Prepare to be blushing throughout all of 2024. “The beautiful feminine ‘balletcore’ makeup featuring lots of pink and rosy cheeks will not be fading away anytime soon, especially for Spring/Summer 2024,” says Paley. To play up the baby-doll pink hues, Lovello suggests layering your blushes to experiment with color and add dimension to your face —?just be sure to start with cream and then put powder on top to prevent the products from separating or muddying together.

You just need a dab of this award-winning blush to create a flirty flush. The shade Lucky is a hot pink hue with a dewy finish that looks especially striking on darker skin tones.?

For a longer-lasting finish, Paley suggests layering this Too Faced blurring blush over the Rare Beauty pick. In addition to increasing longevity, she says it creates a “healthy, youthful look.”

Want a more delicate look? Opt for a rosy pink blush over vibrant fuschia. The handy applicator on this Charlotte Tilbury blush wand makes it easy to place the color exactly where you want it. “I love to place the blush high above the contour and round it up to the temples for a youthful, refreshed look,” Lovello says.

Swipe this subtle pink Dior blush over the Charlotte Tilbury to enhance glowiness. It has a touch of shimmer to highlight your cheekbones.?

To soften the overall blush look, Paley recommends going in with a pink or blurring setting powder, like this one from Huda Beauty, to diffuse and blend out the blush into the under-eye area.?

Blurred-out lips

Say so long to defined, overlined lips next year. “The blurred-out lip trend is a fun and fresh take on lipstick,” says celebrity makeup artist Kristine Studden. “In contrast to the super-defined ‘90s type of lip, this look gives off a soft, subtle and ultra-French-girl chic.”

To achieve this look, Studden recommends applying a matte lipstick (her favorite is GXVE by Gwen Stefani) then blending it out with your fingertips. “Let the lipstick fade into your natural lip tone or add a slightly lighter shade in the middle for a subtle ombré and also plumping effect,” she says.?

While matte lipsticks are typically inherently drying, this one from Sunnies Face lightly moisturizes lips with a unique silk-structure technology.?

For a more long-lasting just-bitten look, you can also use a lip tint, like this Peripera option, using the same technique Studden mentioned above.

Monochromatic makeup

We saw a major shift into monochromatic makeup in 2023, and Paley predicts that it’s here to stay. “This trend is all about multitasking products that you can use on eyes, lips and cheeks for an easy and beautiful look,” she says.

This unique formulation applies like a balm yet dries like a powder. When worn on cheeks or lips it helps to blur and smooth the skin, reduces the look of uneven texture and curbs oil — all while providing gorgeous color payoff.

The stick format of this Milk Makeup hybrid makes application a breeze. Simply swipe it onto lips, eyes and cheeks and buff into skin for a seamless, cohesive look.?

Paley adores this multi-use palette that includes 10 neutral pomades and powders which can be used across the brows, eyes, face and lips. Each oil-absorbing powder shade is paired with coordinating velvety pomade designed to define, shape and enhance your features.

This Nudestix blush in Bareback is Studden’s go-to low maintenance makeup product. “Because you can use it on your eyes and lips you get more bang for your buck,” she says.?

Fluffy undone brows

Studden says that she’s leaving the overly-manicured, laminated brows behind in 2023 and?leaning into a more fluffy, undone brow look. “Think less is more as far as maintenance — don’t over-tweeze or trim,” she explains. Follow the natural shape and fullness of the brow and use a tinted brow gel to simultaneously tame and fill in any sparse areas.

Studden recommends this luxe three-in-one brow gel that defines, tints and sets. As you brush it through your brows, it dispenses tiny fibers to make your arches look naturally fuller.

Benefit Cosmetics’ bestselling Gimme Brow+ comes in 10 hues (including hard-to-come-by auburn and light blonde) making it easier than ever to fluff up your brows to match your hair color.?

If your arches are on the sparser side, try this tinted brow gel from Grande Cosmetics that’s infused with a brow-enhancing serum. The castor oil- and beet root extract-rich formula supports hair growth, so brows become fuller with consistent use.?

DiSabatino relies on Glossier’s iconic Boy Brow to enhance brow fullness. It can keep even the most unruly hairs in place thanks to beeswax and carnauba wax, which provide long-lasting hold without dreaded stiffness.?

Soft glam

For those occasions that you really want to play up your makeup, Lovello suggests going for a soft glam look, which is on par to be one of the hottest trends of the year. To achieve this, she recommends staying away from bold colors and instead sticking with skin-toned hues across your eyes, lips and face. “When I think of a soft ‘effortless’ glam, the meme of ‘a natural look, like Kylie Jenner’ always comes to mind,” she says.

When it comes to your base, Lovello says that you can go as heavy or sheer as you like. “The key is to make it super blended.” The Haus Labs foundation falls in the middle, offering medium coverage.?

For a filter-like finish, Lovello suggests applying her favorite Laura Mercier powder with a puff rather than a fluffy brush. This allows for more precise application and creates an airbrushed effect. Try using the Pimoys Powder Puff, which can be found on Amazon for less than $10.?

?“For eye makeup, pick one color and blend it over the lid,” Lovello says. These creamy Charlotte Tilbury eye shadows provide rich color payoff and blend with the flick of your wrist, creating a gorgeous smokey eye with minimal effort.?

Rather than wearing a full strip of falsies, half lashes can still give you that dramatic effect without looking too heavy, says Lovello. Place these accent lashes from Ardell along the outer edge of your lash line for extra oomph.?

Complete the look with a neutral lip. “Find the perfect cool-toned brown liner and nude lip for your complexion,” says Lovello. This lipstick, along with the Makeup by Mario Ultra Suede Lip Sculpting Pencil come in a range of nudes for every skin tone.?

Sustainable beauty

“Brands such as Merit, Glossier, Ilia and Pacifica have paved the way for heightened awareness of the environmental impact of our beauty choices. The focus on sustainability has inspired a wave of new brands,” says DisSabatino. “In 2024, I anticipate a surge in brands prioritizing both ingredients and packaging sustainability — a trend that aligns with the conscious choices we all desire.”

This convenient stick is completely vegan as well as gluten- and cruelty-free. Plus, the packaging is recyclable. You’ll get buildable, lightweight coverage when using it as foundation or concealer, but pro tip: It can also function as contour when you choose a darker hue.

Along with being vegan and cruelty-free, we consider this lip balm the actual bomb dot com due to the fact that it comes in nine delectable scents and hues, ranging from Birthday, a soft shimmering clear gloss, to Wild Fig, a flattering sheer coral color.?

This clean mascara checks all the boxes: It lengthens, lifts and separates for dramatic, fluttery lashes. The formula also works to nourish your fringe with a mix of keratin, shea butter and beeswax.

Fruity and spicy, this Pacifica perfume’s ingredient list reads like a fresh smoothie. You’ll catch notes of strawberries, raspberries and three different types of oranges.?
