While some people are cruising for a big-screen TV among the Cyber Monday deals, others may have realized the utility of a projector. Samsung has its own little utility option with The Freestyle (2nd Gen), a compact little projector with a built-in pedestal that makes it easy to set up just about anywhere. While it’s normally a little pricey for a fairly basic picture, Amazon has it for 25% off, bringing the price down to a much more palatable $598.

We’ve had a chance to play with the second-gen Freestyle, and we’re currently in the process of conducting a full review, but we can say already that it’s a competent little projector. In a dark room, it shines a nice, bright picture that you can stretch out to span a great deal of space — 50-inch picture, 100-inch picture, it’s up to you. It’s only 1080p and not bright enough for use in a bright room, but very few projectors under $1,000 are going beyond that anyway. Surprisingly, the tiny can, which is no bigger than a 1-liter water bottle, also packs decent speakers, making it an effective all-in-one system.
The Freestyle (2nd Gen) runs Samsung’s own smart TV ecosystem, so you can download and run streaming apps right from the projector. It’s quick and easy to navigate with the included remote, which has a little solar panel for recharging. Gamers can even tap into the projector’s Gaming Hub to play games via cloud streaming. With all these capabilities, it’s a device worth considering if you’re on the hunt for a big screen on a budget.
