Video game-inspired stories have been all the rage this year. From television series like “The Last of Us” and “Twisted Metal” to films such as “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Tetris,” Hollywood has nearly perfected taking on classic gaming properties. As the summer blockbuster season wraps up, Sony is looking to strike gold by releasing an adaptation around its storied Gran Turismo franchise.
Despite the sim racing series not being known for having an actual narrative driven campaign, the sports drama directed by Neil Blomkamp (“District 9”) takes a different approach in telling its story. Starring Archie Madekwe (“Midsommar”) “Gran Turismo” tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough whose skills in the game were good enough to transition into a career in automotive racing.
Expect plenty of high-octane racing action with a story revolving around following one’s dreams even when faced with personal and professional obstacles. Other stars in the film include David Harbour (“Stranger Things”), Orlando Bloom (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Djimon Hounsou (“Shazam!”).
It’s been over a year since the seventh installment in Polyphony Digital’s racing sim released on both PS4 and PS5. As “Gran Turismo”inches closer to hitting theaters on Aug. 25, here are some accessories to enhance the experience of playing the game that inspired the film.
Where to play Gran Turismo 7
The latest installment in Sony’s popular racing simulation series features hundreds of cars, tons of game modes and the most realistic visuals the franchise has seen yet.
The series’ first multiplatform release, Gran Turismo 7is available for both PS4 and PS5. Collectively, both versions feature 400 base cars with more available through DLC alongside 63 circuit tracks spread across dozens of locations around the world. Single-player and multiplayer modes are available that’ll provide hundreds of hours of gameplay. Just note that regardless of what mode is in play, Gran Turismo 7 requires a constant internet connection.
When it comes to solo-play offerings, there’s a really cool campaign that also serves as a history lesson on various global automotive manufactures like Ford, Honda, Porsche and the like. Similar to other games in the Gran Turismo series, there are various license tests in addition to driving schools in order to make players a better performer on the track. Individuals looking for exclusive cars and rewards can participate in time-limited special events and mission challenges too.
Online multiplayer is unlocked after making some headway through the single-player portion. There are robust options that include standard online races, team races, time trials and even a Sports mode for competing under official regulations. For good measure, there’s also split-screen multiplayer as well for couch play with friends.
PS5-specific features include multiple graphics settings that let you favor performance or visual fidelity, advanced DualSense controller haptics for better immersion, spatial audio support and an exclusive virtual reality mode for PlayStation VR 2 owners.
The best Gran Turismo 7 accessories

The VR perspective really helps bring the racing to life visually and audibly. Meanwhile, players who aren’t fans of cockpit or hood views have a better way to gauge the apex of turns or can look to the side and rearview mirrors without having to press a button. Playing GT7 in VR is significantly the best way to play.
Logitech’s flagship racing wheel features TrueForce force feedback technology that really makes racing games come alive. Due to advanced motors and algorithms, players can feel different road surfaces outside the various vehicle steering nuances. A dual-clutch launch control system comes in handy for going zero to 60 mph off the line, in addition to responsive pedals featuring a progressive spring system. The G923 wheel does come with standard paddle shifters. However, if you want an authentic manual transmission experience, you can purchase an additional Logitech G Driving Force Shifter, which comes in six speed gears in addition to reverse.
When it comes to flight and racing sims, Thrustmaster has earned a reputation within the spaces as a top-tier peripheral manufacturer. There isn’t a better example than the T248P racing wheel. Beyond its?premium looks, featuring leather wrapping and wheel design catering to a wide variety of racing styles, the wheel features 25 action buttons, two dual-position encoders on each of the wheel’s spokes and on-the-fly force feedback adjustment.?
If the included magnetic paddle shifters aren’t enough for you, the T248P is also compatible with the PXN A7 Shifter, among other compatible shifters. However, the big highlight feature of the T248P is the built-in racing display. This allows users to see gear ratios, RPM, lap times and other information for better racing.
Compatible with both Logitech and Thrustmaster racing wheels, the Guil Vim Racing Wheel Stand is perfect for racing-sim fans on a budget who are looking to have a more immersive experience. Built to be easily put together, the racing wheel stand is made with both ergonomics and balance in mind. It doesn’t matter if drivers are used to shifting with the left or right hand, this accessory is equipped with a gear-level stand that can be switched to either side. Most importantly, it features a foldable design which can make storage and setup an easy process between races.
Sim racers looking for a reasonably priced racing cockpit set up can look to manufacturer Next Level Racing. Starting with the GT Lite Foldable Simulator Cockpit, it’s compatible with different wheel/pedal set-ups from Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec (for those with even more money to spend).
