As you’re getting your backyard or patio set up for the rest of the summer (and beyond), you should really consider getting an outdoor rug for your space.

“A well-chosen outdoor rug can enhance the aesthetic appeal of an outdoor space while providing a durable and comfortable surface that can withstand the elements and regular use,” says Rasheeda Gray, interior designer and owner of Gray Space Interiors.

Outdoor rugs are useful for the same reason indoor rugs are so important in your home. Interior designer Anne Sage says you can use them “to anchor a furniture arrangement like a seating or dining area and to add a touch of color or pattern.” Plus, rugs can distract from features in your outdoor space you’d rather keep hidden. “They can be handy for quickly transforming a deck or concrete surface that perhaps needs to be refurbished but isn’t on your renovation agenda for the near future,” she says.

That said, there are so many outdoor rugs on the market that it can be hard to know how to choose one that will add style and be a lasting, worthwhile investment. To help you out, we asked several pro interior designers for their thoughts on what makes a good outdoor rug — and their picks for the 20 best outdoor rugs you can buy right now.

Best outdoor rugs

“This is a great option because it’s flat-weave and durable, and brings in both warm and cool tones to help the space feel more cohesive,” says Lauren Farrell, senior interior designer at?Pacaso. Its geometric design can work with modern and traditional styles too.?

If you want the look of jute with the durability of a synthetic rug, look no further. “This neutral, sophisticated stripe is very versatile, and I love that the rug is made from recycled fibers,” says Sage.

“Some outdoor rugs can feel flimsy and cheap, but this jute-like one has good heft to really anchor your space,” Sage says. Plus, this pick will definitely give your outdoor space a vacation-like vibe. “The pattern feels very ‘Tulum chic!’”

Farrell calls this beige performance rug a “great neutral option” that is both flat-weave and polypropylene. The durable rug comes in a handful of additional colors, including both light and dark gray, blue and brown.?

This colorful pick from interior designer?Angela Belt?is made from recycled materials — water bottles that have been pelletized, turned into fibers and spun into yarn, to be exact. The brand says it's actually soft despite being made to stand up to the elements.?

“From the iconic pattern to the braided texture, this striped outdoor rug has classic Americana summer written all over it," Sage says of this pick from Serena & Lily. It comes in three color combinations: light blue and natural white, natural white and navy, and natural white and beige.

“This rug combines beautiful shades of pink with a modern geometric design, adding a contemporary and stylish flair to any outdoor space,” says Jodi Peterman, CEO and owner of?Elizabeth Erin Designs. “It’s crafted from weather-resistant materials, making it durable and perfect for outdoor use.”

Gray recommends this machine-washable rug that’s perfect for adding “fun colors to your outdoor space.” The soft sage green color and subtle botanical print will help make your patio feel like a tropical oasis.?

As Farrell says, “rugs can be a great way to bring in a fun pattern without it being too overwhelming, and this is one example.” She also points out that this pick is polyester, making it “durable and easy to clean.”?

This gorgeous slate blue and cream rug from Ruggable is another pick of Belt’s. It can be used both outdoors and indoors, and best of all, it’s machine-washable in addition to being fade-, mold- and mildew-resistant.

The simple pattern is what Gray loves about this neutral polypropylene rug. It features a border of fine-line stripes that come together on the corners to create a cool geometric look. And if you prefer a pop of color instead, it comes in other hues too.

This round jute rug is proof that “outdoor rugs don't have to take up an entire area,” Gray says.?“Smaller rugs still add just as much ambience!” Note that since this rug is made of jute, you’ll need to place it somewhere that’s safer from the elements.?

“The heathered textural weave of this solid outdoor rug boasts a level of sophistication usually seen only in indoor-only rugs,” Sage says. It comes in three neutral colors that are extremely versatile, and five rectangular sizes.

This rug chosen by Belt bridges light neutrals with fun patterns for a subtle statement. The performance rug is handwoven from durable polyester and can be used outdoors or indoors if desired.

Gray notes that the darker color of this simple outdoor area rug is “easier to clean up,” which is a huge perk. This higher-end pick is designed to have the look and feel of a wool rug (the standard for indoor rugs) despite its polypropylene makeup.

Belt and Peterman are both fans of Ernesta rugs. “[Its] custom indoor/outdoor rugs are an affordable option and they can be shipped in less than a month," Belt says. This rug in particular “features a contemporary design with cappuccino hues that can enhance any outdoor setting,” Peterman adds. “The durable construction makes it suitable for high-traffic areas, and it’s easy to clean, ensuring it remains in great condition over time.”
