Kinetic by Windstream at a glance

Kinetic is an internet service provided by Windstream Communications. One of our best internet providers, Kinetic provides fiber optic, dial-up, DSL and cable internet connections in 18 states.

Fast facts

  • Windstream Corporation was formed through the spinoff of Alltel’s landline business and a merger with VALOR Communications Group in 2006.
  • Kinetic is known for its affordable, high-speed internet.
  • Kinetic is a quality internet choice if you live in rural or suburban areas with limited internet coverage.
  • The provider delivers internet service to parts of 18 states.
  • Kinetic by Windstream has an A+ grade rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

What we like

Kinetic by Windstream offers the best high-speed, affordable internet in suburban or rural areas. It typically provides faster speeds, competitive prices and better service terms than other rural internet providers. Kinetic is known for its fiber-cable-backed DSL system, which delivers faster internet speeds than satellite or fixed wireless options.

Although Kinetic has customers in 18 states, its relatively small service area targets rural and suburban regions. Kinetic may be the perfect choice if you live in Georgia, Iowa or Kentucky, where the company’s coverage extends across half of each state or farther.

What we don’t like

While Kinetic supplies affordable high-speed internet, it has limited availability. If you live in a rural area, your only options for internet connection might be satellite or Kinetic (typically DSL). Kinetic’s DSL network can deliver faster speeds than many satellite, fixed wireless or other DSL providers. However, if you live closer to a city with more internet options, such as cable and fiber optic, we recommend comparing Kinetic to other providers to decide the best fit for your needs.

Kinetic by Windstream pros and cons

Kinetic by Windstream has no data caps or annual contracts. It’s an attractive option for those seeking reliable internet service, particularly in rural areas where consistently fast speeds can be hard to come by.

pro tip

  • Before committing, ensure that fast service is available at your address. Talk to neighbors and ask questions in local Facebook groups.

There are other considerations to keep in mind. The provider imposes a few one-time fees, including a $50 activation fee, a $35 professional installation fee and a $65 charge for new phone jack installation at your home. It also charges a monthly equipment rental fee of $10.99 unless you use your own modem and router.

One of the cons is Kinetic’s below-average customer satisfaction ratings. On average, Yelp reviewers rate it at 1.2 out of 5. One significant factor contributing to this dissatisfaction is the network’s reliance on DSL technology, which offers slower connection speeds than other internet types.

Pros

  • Fast speeds for rural areas
  • No annual contracts
  • No data caps

Cons

  • Pricing and speed vary by location
  • Below-average customer satisfaction ratings
  • Monthly equipment rental fees and installation fees (you can opt to use your equipment and self-install)
