How do Delta credit cards work?
American Express issues seven co-branded Delta credit cards, each offering benefits specifically for Delta flyers. Delta credit cards are linked to the card holder’s Delta SkyMiles loyalty number. When you earn Delta miles through everyday spending, your rewards won’t accumulate on your credit card, as is the case for cash back and many other rewards credit cards. Instead, your miles will be deposited into your Delta SkyMiles account.
Other popular travel credit cards earn flexible points that transfer to many different airline and hotel programs. They’re a good option for those who don’t want to commit to flying Delta and its partners. For example, the Amex Platinum earns points that transfer to Delta at a 1:1 ratio. The tradeoff is that it doesn’t come with Delta-specific perks such as priority boarding and in-flight discounts.
Delta credit card benefits
The specific benefits you receive vary depending on the Delta credit card you have. That said, most Delta credit cards come with perks such as:
- The first checked bag free for you and up to eight companions on the same Delta reservation
- 20% back on in-flight purchases of food and beverages
- Priority boarding (Main Cabin 1)
- TakeOff 15, a 15% discount on award seats on Delta-operated flights booked through Delta
- Pay with Miles, which allows you to “buy” Delta flights at a rate of 1 cent per mile
The more premium Delta credit cards, such as the Delta SkyMiles Platinum, offer benefits such as a single-use companion certificate each year you renew the card and a boost toward Delta elite status. In fact, these cards give you the opportunity to earn Delta elite status just from spending, albeit a significant amount.
Delta’s top-tier Reserve credit cards even come with complimentary access to Delta Sky Club and Amex Centurion airport lounges when flying Delta.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the no annual fee Delta SkyMiles? Blue American Express Card comes with few Delta perks worth mentioning. Its biggest benefit is its ability to earn Delta miles.
How to choose the right Delta credit card for you
If you’re trying to pick the best Delta credit card for your situation, you’ll want to consider several factors:
- Travel style: The best Delta credit card for you can hinge on how often you travel and whether you visit airports with a considerable Delta presence.
- Annual fee: Weigh each card’s unique benefits against its annual fee. If you’re not getting more value than you’re paying each year, the card isn’t for you.
- Earning rate: Delta SkyMiles credit cards offer varying bonus spending categories. Choose the card that best complements your spending habits.
- Welcome bonus: All other things being equal, choosing the Delta Airlines credit card that offers the largest welcome bonus can be an easy way to springboard toward a (nearly) free vacation.
How to maximize Delta credit card rewards
Just because you earn Delta miles doesn’t mean you’re relegated to exclusively flying Delta. You can use Delta SkyMiles to book award flights on any airline that partners with Delta, including Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet.
The number of miles you’ll pay for any given flight is difficult to predict. Delta generally doesn’t have fixed award prices based on your origin and destination. But if you’re flexible with your dates, you can sometimes find short domestic hops for under 5,000 miles, and transcontinental flights for under 10,000 miles. You can get 15% off award flights booked through Delta with an eligible Delta card thanks to the TakeOff 15 feature.
Additionally, the annual single-use companion certificate you’ll receive from Delta’s premium credit cards can save you many hundreds of dollars (even over $1,000, depending on your flight route). With this perk, when you pay for your own seat, you can bring along a companion for just the cost of taxes and fees.
Methodology
Welcome bonus value (25%)
The best travel credit cards offer bonus rewards after you spend a certain amount in your first months with the card. We calculated how much those bonuses are worth using valuations from The Points Guy, and gave cards that offer more value a higher score.
Rewards value (25%)
We used spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and The Points Guy’s valuation of Delta SkyMiles to determine which cards dole out the best rewards value.
Travel benefits (20%)
Cards with a range of day-of-travel benefits such as a free first checked bag, priority boarding, airport lounge access and in-flight discounts scored well in this category. We also looked at other travel perks, including trip cancellation insurance, rental car insurance and trip delay insurance.
Select fees (20%)
We considered each card’s annual fee in relation to the benefits it offers, giving cards with an overall better value a boost.
Other benefits and annual credits and bonuses (10%)
Many Delta credit cards offer additional perks, including credits for eligible purchases. We considered these and other non-travel perks, such as cell phone protection, purchase protection and extended warranty.
What didn’t make the cut
A few other credit cards Delta flyers may consider while researching the best option didn’t make our list of top Delta credit cards:
- Delta SkyMiles Blue: This is a no annual fee credit card that falls short in terms of benefits and welcome bonus. The other Delta cards will do more to improve your travel experience.
- The Business Platinum Card? from American Express * The information for the The Business Platinum Card? from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : You’ll get many of the same benefits as you would with the Amex Platinum card, but you’ll have to be a small business owner to open it. Also, the card’s ongoing benefits are business-centric, making them useful for fewer people (rates and fees).
- American Express? Gold Card: This card earns lots of Amex points for everyday spending, including at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets. But it charges a $325 annual fee and doesn’t offer any Delta-specific benefits, such as free checked bags or priority boarding.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred? Card: With this card, you’ll earn Chase Ultimate Rewards? points, which transfer to many Chase partner airlines. And though Delta isn’t one of them, you can use your points to book Delta flights through Chase Travel? at a rate of 1.25 cents each.
- Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: This earns Capital One miles, which transfer to many airlines (though, again, not Delta). You can also redeem your miles to offset travel purchases or book airfare through Capital One Travel (including Delta flights) at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
The Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Delta Reserve Business cards currently offer Delta Sky Club access with unlimited visits, as long as you’re flying on a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight.? But starting Feb. 1, 2025, card holders will only receive 15 visits per year unless they spend $75,000 on the card in a calendar year. Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum card holders can also visit Delta Sky Clubs when they fly Delta, but again, starting Feb. 1, 2025, this access will be capped at 10 visits per year unless the same spending requirement is met.
You should have at least a good credit score to apply for credit cards from American Express, including Delta SkyMiles credit cards. FICO defines this as a score of at least 670.
You will not lose your miles if you cancel your Delta credit card. That’s because your miles aren’t stored on your card; instead, they are deposited directly into your Delta SkyMiles account. However, Amex’s terms and conditions say if you cancel or downgrade your card within the first year, it may take back bonus miles from your account, especially if you have a history of doing this.
When you apply for a Delta credit card, you’ll have the option to include your SkyMiles account number, automatically linking your new card with your account. Otherwise, a new SkyMiles account will be created for you
Yes, the Delta SkyMiles Blue card has no annual fee. However, it’s light on benefits and its welcome bonus offer is weak compared to other Delta cards.
