The Allswell Luxe Bed in a Box Hybrid mattress is a budget-friendly mattress-in-a-box available exclusively through Walmart. While many hybrid mattresses cost $1,000 and up for a queen-size bed, the Luxe Hybrid is considerably less expensive—a queen-size is available for $399.

We slept on the Allswell Luxe Bed in a Box Hybrid for a month to find out whether the savings let you rest easier or cost you a good night’s sleep.

Walmart's bargain-priced Allswell hybrid mattress gives back sleepers good support in a soft mattress, though it isn't as comfortable or cool as pricier competitors.

What we liked about it

It’s a plush, soft mattress that’s good for back sleepers

The Allswell Luxe Bed in a Box Hybrid feels plush and supportive, especially when lying on your back. With quilted cover fabric atop a memory foam layer, plus a spring coil layer beneath that, the mattress has a cushiony, light and cloud-like feel, while remaining supportive.

I did sink into it, though the Luxe Hybrid didn’t mold to my body as much as some other memory foam mattresses I’ve tested — a positive since many foam mattresses are confining and can feel overly hot.

Since the coil layer offers a good amount of support, I didn’t find sleeping on my side as pressure-point-relieving as I would have liked and I noticed I needed to switch sides more often. The Allswell doesn’t provide the full-body support and comfort of something like the Leesa Legend Hybrid.

It was most comfortable when I slept on my back, a position in which the mix of softness and support did the most good. There’s enough give that you don’t feel pressure, but enough support to keep your back aligned.

Stomach sleepers who like a very soft bed may find this bed comfortable as well, but if you’re among those who prefer a medium to firm mattress it likely isn’t for you. While we’ve got more advice on how to choose a mattress based on your sleep position and other factors, the Allswell Luxe is best for value conscious back sleepers who like a soft bed.

The mattress is free of odors

As expected, this mattress did not emit a chemical smell — and none of the mattresses I’ve tested over the past year have. When memory foam mattresses first became popular, buyers complained regularly about a chemical smell, but it seems manufacturers have made improvements in their processes and by and large this is no longer a concern. The foam used in the Allswell Luxe Bed in a Box Hybrid is CertiPur-US certified, which means it’s made without formaldehyde and flame retardants, and is low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The mattress is easy to set up

The Allswell Luxe Bed in a Box Hybrid comes rolled up and vacuum-sealed. Similar to other mattress-in-a-box options, unpacking involves cutting away the plastic sealing and situating the bed on the frame while the mattress rapidly expands.

While it isn’t as light as the featherweight Molecule 2 AirTec mattress, the Allswell mattress weighs just 95 pounds, lighter than many others I’ve tested that weigh well over 120 pounds. The lighter weight made this easier to maneuver and get it in the correct position.

What we didn’t like about it

Not as cooling as we would have liked

Allswell advertises that the Luxe Hybrid is topped with a cool-to-the-touch fabric to help keep you comfortable year-round. I didn’t find it had a noticeable cooling sensation, at least not one that made a significant difference, and overall I found the mattress a touch warmer than some of its pricier hybrid competitors. It isn’t as cooling as the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow.

The supportive coil layer means that the Allswell Hybrid Luxe doesn’t give you the fully enveloping sensation that some all-memory-foam beds create, so it is more breathable than beds that hug your body and store heat, but not as cool in our experience as dedicated cooling mattresses.

No options

The Allswell Luxe Hybrid only comes in a 12-inch depth, and in a single firmness level that Walmart refers to as “medium” (more equivalent to other manufacturers’ medium-soft firmness, in our experience).

This is understandable given the low price, and Walmart does offer other models in the Allswell lineup, including the firm Brick mattress and the 14-inch-deep pillow-top Supreme bed, though all of the variants are offered in single firmnesses. If you want something you can specify to taste, you’ll want to look at a made-to-order mattress like the Saatva Classic.

White-glove delivery service is not offered

Allswell doesn’t offer in-home setup, unfortunately. However, as previously mentioned, I found the bed easier to set up than heavier mattresses because I could move it around more easily.

Could use more edge support

The brand says that the Luxe includes added edge support, but I didn’t find this made much of a difference. When sitting on the edge of the bed, I found that it sinks down quite a bit. While I didn’t find myself falling off the bed during the night given the lack of edge support, someone who prefers to sit on the edge of the bed while getting dressed and prefers a firm support while doing so may find this challenging.

Bottom line

The Allswell mattress offers plush comfort, but not the most luxurious experience. That being said, it’s a great value considering the materials and price — a spring-and-memory-foam hybrid for under $400 for a queen is hard to beat. The brand states it’s medium-firm but I found it was closer to medium-soft. Even though this was a softer mattress, I didn’t find it comfortable for side sleeping and this would likely be too soft for stomach sleepers, so this would be best for back sleepers. Those who like a very firm mattress or are predominantly side sleepers will likely want to go with another option.
