The mail bomb suspect was arrested today. Here's how it happened.

Mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc was arrested today in south Florida and charged with making threats against former presidents and other explosive-related crimes.

Our live coverage of the arrest has ended, but here’s everything you need to know:

  • The arrest: Sayoc was arrested in a south Florida auto parts store Friday morning. The 56-year-old Florida resident has a criminal history.
  • The charges: He was charged with interstate transportation of an?explosive, Illegal mailing of?explosives, threats against?former presidents and?other persons, threatening?interstate communications and assaulting current and former?federal officers. Sayoc faces up to 48 years in prison.
  • The packages: Authorities have intercepted at least 13 packages sent to prominent Democratic politicians, donors and CNN offices in New York, officials said. (Read about the packages and who they were addressed to here.)
  • The devices: The explosive devices were nearly identical and consisted of a six-inch PVC pipe, a small clock, battery, wiring and energetic material, according to the complaint against Sayoc. Some of the mailings sent to several political figures included photographs of the targets with a red X marked across their faces.
  • What President Trump said: He condemned the serial bomb mailings as “terrorizing acts.” He said: “We must never allow political violence to take root in America. I’m committed to doing everything in my power as President to stop it.”

Suspect's former lawyer: He struggled with “a lack of comprehension of reality”

Cesar Altieri Sayoc, the mail bomb suspect arrested Friday, has struggled for years with “a lack of comprehension of reality,” his former lawyer told CNN.

Attorney Ronald S. Lowy said Sayoc’s mother and sisters have urged him to seek medical treatment, but he has refused.

Sayoc has been estranged from the family for the past several years, Lowy said, and his mother “can’t understand his (Sayoc’s) behavior or views.”

Though FBI searched the mother’s home on Friday, Lowy predicted it would be “a waste of time” since Sayoc hadn’t visited the residence for at least three years.

Lowy said the closest he came to getting treatment for Sayoc was in 2004 during a drug case that involved steroids. He said he negotiated with prosecutors to have it charged as a narcotics case so his client could get court mandated-treatment.

It was not immediately clear whether he actually received such treatment.

Lowy, who said he now represents Sayoc’s mother and two sisters, said they are struggling to come to terms with the allegations.

“It’s a very emotional time for them,” he said.

Van towed from arrest scene was covered in political stickers

A van in Plantation, Florida, towed away from the scene of bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc’s arrest had images of President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence as well as a “CNN Sucks” sticker, video footage shows.

Sayoc had been kicked out by his parents and was living in the white van widely seen in pictures Friday, according to a law enforcement official.

It caught the eye of Michael Hebert, who filmed footage of what appeared to be the van outside an LA Fitness gym in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 18.?

Hebert, who goes to the gym, said he’d seen Sayoc there a number of times and had seen the van parked outside.?

It stood out to him because of the “political tone,” Hebert told CNN, “which is wild regardless of your (political) views.”?

“It’s just too much political stuff,” Hebert said, adding it seemed “a little bit extreme.”

Here’s the footage:

Mike Pence: "We will never allow our political differences to justify threats or acts of violence"

Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at a campaign event in Roswell, New Mexico, addressed the suspicious packages and the suspect’s arrest on Friday afternoon.

“We will never allow our political differences to justify threats or acts of violence — not now, not ever,” he said, adding that President Trump had “made clear these acts as despicable and they have no place in our society.”

Pence also praised the “amazing job” of investigators and law enforcement, and called for national unity.

"This was a job very well done": Eric Holder thanks law enforcement and postal workers

Former Attorney General Eric Holder thanked law enforcement and postal workers for their response to the suspicious packages in a tweet moments ago.

“The work you did is reflective of the excellence and dedication that you always bring to the job — and that the American people always appreciate,” he said.

One of the suspicious packages found Wednesday was addressed to Holder, but it was returned to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s office in Florida, since her address was listed as the return address.

Here’s his tweet:

Suspect will appear Monday in a Florida court

Bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc will appear Monday at 2 p.m. ET in a Miami federal court, according to the Southern District of New York.?

Sayoc was?charged Friday with five federal crimes and faces up to 48 years in prison in connection to improvised explosive devices sent to prominent Democratic politicians, donors and CNN offices in New York.

Trump acknowledges suspect supported him, declines to disavow

President Trump acknowledged the suspect in a string of bomb mailings had pictures of the President on his van, but did not disavow the support of the suspect.

“I did not see my face on the van,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House.?

At the arrest scene Friday morning, a sticker-covered van was towed away. It featured images of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

“I heard he was a person who prefers me over others, but I did not see that,” Trump said.

The President then referenced a shooting last year at Republicans’ congressional baseball practice, carried out by a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“If you look at what happened to Steve Scalise, that was from a supporter of another party,” Trump said.

Asked by CNN if he disavowed the support of the suspect, he did not answer.

Authorities continue to investigate another suspicious package in Sacramento, California, addressed to Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris.

Harris’ office released this statement on Friday afternoon:

Debbie Wasserman Schultz thanks law enforcement for "working tirelessly to keep us safe"

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said she is grateful to law enforcement for quickly arresting a suspect in connection with the suspicious packages.

The Florida Democrat said she will stay in “direct contact” with law enforcement.

A package intended for former Attorney General Eric Holder was sent to Wasserman Schultz’s Florida office.

Package addressed to Tom Steyer removed from California post office

A suspicious package addressed to billionaire Tom Steyer has been removed from a post office in the Burlingame, California.

It is being checked out at a facility just east of San Francisco International Airport. Police said it looked similar to the other suspicious packages that have been mailed to Trump critics and Democratic politicians this week.

The Burlingame Police released this statement:

Earlier today, Steyer condemned the mailings as a “systematic attack on our democracy.”

Steyer has donated heavily to Democrats and recently gave $2 million to Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.

Trump called to congratulate FBI director after suspect's arrest

When asked when the FBI briefed President Trump on having a suspect in custody, FBI Director Christopher Wray said, “I’m not going to get into our?discussions with the President.?

“I will say that I received a very nice?congratulatory call from the president shortly before heading over here, and saw his remarks that he made at the White House. I?think he, like every other?American, is and should be proud?of the unbelievable work that was done not just by the FBI but by?all of our law enforcement?partners across multiple states.”

Some mailings included photographs of the targets

Some of the mailings sent to several political figures included photographs of the targets with a red X marked across their faces, according to a criminal complaint filed against bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc.

The devices in the packages were nearly identical and consisted of a six-inch PVC pipe, a small clock, battery, wiring and energetic material, according to the complaint.

Five of the 13 packages were routed through a US Postal processing center in Opa-Locka, Florida, according to the complaint.

Some of Sayoc’s Facebook posts had been reported and removed

Facebook had previously removed multiple posts from Cesar Sayoc’s account for violating its community standards, a Facebook spokesperson told CNN on Friday.

The spokesperson said that some of the removals were the result of Facebook users reporting Sayoc’s posts for violations. Other posts were identified by Facebook through its detection systems.

Facebook would not specify how many posts were removed.

The violations were not severe enough to prompt the company to remove his account entirely, the spokesperson added.

However, Facebook did remove the account after Sayoc was named as a suspect, and says it is working with law enforcement.

Here’s Facebook’s statement:

Cesar Sayoc was living in his white van at the time of his arrest

Bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc had been kicked out by his parents, so he has living in the van that we have seen in pictures today, according to a law enforcement official.

The sticker-covered white van was taken to an FBI facility in Miramar, Florida.

The FBI agents used flash bangs in making the arrest and took him into custody near the AutoZone in Plantation, the official said.?

Sayoc was initially somewhat cooperative, the official said. He told investigators that the pipe bombs wouldn’t have hurt anyone and that he didn’t want to hurt anyone.?

Sayoc has now retained a lawyer so the questioning has ceased, the official said.?

Jeff Sessions: "I don't know" why the suspect targeted Democrats

When asked why bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc was targeting Democrats, Attorney General Jeff Sessions replied, “I don’t know.?Other than what you might?normally expect.?He may have been – he appears to?be partisan but that will be?determined by the facts as the?case goes forward. I’m not able to comment on that.”

Partisanship and political rhetoric came up in another question, to which FBI Director Christopher Wray responded, “We’re focused not on the (political) talk?but on the work…?It’s too early at this stage for us to be?discussing motivation in this?particular case.”

When asked if “nasty political rhetoric” might inspire violence, Wray said, “We’re concerned about people?committing acts of violence?under any motivation.”

There could be more packages out there, FBI head says

FBI Director Christopher Wray said there could still be more suspicious packages with possible explosive devices out there.

He urged anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or?tips.fbi.gov.

NYPD commissioner: The public is safe but should stay vigilant

Speaking at the Department of Justice press conference, New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill?praised the cooperation between the NYPD and the FBI as “a partnership that was?forged in fire.”

He thanked the public and the media for their help, but warned that people should remain vigilant as the investigation continues.

“Today’s arrest means the people?across our nation are safe.?But there might be more packages?out there and everyone still?needs to take caution,” O’Neill said.

Cesar Sayoc's fingerprint was on one of the packages sent to Rep. Maxine Waters

Authorities used a fingerprint found on an envelope sent to Rep. Maxine Waters to identify suspect Cesar Sayoc, FBI Director Christopher Wray said at Friday’s news conference.

“Based on their initial analysis,?they uncovered a latent?fingerprint from one of the?envelopes containing an I.E.D.?That had been sent to?Congresswoman Maxine?Waters.?We have confirmed this?fingerprint is that of Cesar?Sayoc,” he said.

Authorities are looking at a possible DNA connection between samples collected from two different devices and a sample collected during one of Sayoc’s earlier arrests in Florida, Wray added.

Sayoc's former attorney describes him as having “trouble conforming”

When mail bomb suspect Cesar Altieri Sayoc had his electricity turned off in 2002, he grew frustrated with his efforts to convince the power company to turn it back on, his longtime attorney recalled Friday.

“I bet if I threatened to blow up your office you’d turn it back on quickly,” Sayoc’s then-attorney, Ronald S. Lowy, quoted him as saying.

Lowy, who represented Sayoc in the case in Miami, Florida, told CNN his client never intended to make good on the threat. He said he was sentenced to a year’s probation “and allowed to continue with his life.”?

Lowy said he represented Sayoc in several subsequent matters, but nothing involving violence or threats of violence.

He described Sayoc, 56, as someone who had “trouble conforming” and “didn’t fit in.”

Lowy said he was not surprised that the devices he is suspected of assembling and mailing to past and current politicians and the Manhattan offices of CNN did not explode. He questioned his former client’s ability to successfully devise and execute such a scheme.

He described Sayoc as a man involved in petty offenses spread out over time.

In one case, Lowy said, Sayoc altered his driver’s license to make himself appear younger because he remained single and thought his age may be hurting him on the dating scene.

“He was embarrassed about his age,” the lawyer said.

Lowy said he recalled Sayoc frequenting the gym and working as a personal trainer at one point.

Lowy said he was in consultation with Sayoc’s family and discussing the possibility of representing him in connection with Friday’s arrest.

Sayoc once threatened to blow up a utility "worse than September 11th"

Bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc threatened to blow up a Florida utility company and said it would be “worse than September 11th,” according to a 2002 police report from Miami Police Department obtained by CNN.?

Sayoc “contacted a rep Florida Power and Light Co… and threatened to blow up FPL and that ‘it would be worse than September 11th,’”according to the report.

The document shows an individual reported that a call came in from “one of FP&L customer who threatened to blow up the building if FP&L turned off his light” and that the caller?threatened the individual with “bodily harm.”?

The report corresponds to a 2002 case in which Sayoc was charged with “bomb/threat to throw.”

The bomb suspect was arrested in 1999 for possession of a stolen vehicle

Bomb suspect Cesar Altieri Sayoc was arrested on April 10, 1999 for possession of a stolen vehicle, but the charges were later dismissed by the District Attorney’s Office, according to Matthews Police Department Public Information Officer Tim Aycock.

It’s listed as a voluntary dismissal by the DA, Aycock said.

The Matthews Police Department was the investigating agency.

The arrest occurred when one of their officers “stopped to help a broken-down vehicle and it turned out to a be stolen vehicle,” Aycock said.

Meghan McDonald, with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg District Attorney, said they are prohibited from discussing cases with pending charges. She clarified to say that he has no pending charges in Mecklenburg County.

Sayoc’s criminal history includes other offenses such as stealing copper pipes from a Florida Home Depot in 2014 and threatening to “discharge destructive device” in 2002, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.

Trump has no plans to call the people the packages were addressed to

Former lawyer recalls suspect being "respectful"

A lawyer who represented Cesar Sayoc on a number of shoplifting charges in Broward County, Florida, described him as “respectful” and “polite.”

“I am shocked,” Dan Aaronson said. “He was always incredibly polite towards me and treated me with the upmost respect.”

Aaronson did not recall the last time he represented Sayoc or interacted with him but said it was likely within the past one or two years. One of the shoplifting cases involved a suit stolen by Sayoc. All of the cases Aaronson represented him in ended in fines or probation, he said.

Aaronson said he never had a political discussion with Sayoc. He was not aware of Sayoc’s employment history or where he was currently living. He never interacted with a spouse or children of Sayoc’s and wasn’t sure if he had any close family.?

Sayoc would call his former lawyer from time to time for “friendly” chats, Aaronson said, and if the alleged bomber were to call him again and ask him to represent him in the expected charges, Aaronson said he would say yes.?

Sayoc’s arrest record includes "threat to bomb"

Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show a string of arrests dating back to the early 1990s for 56-year-old Cesar Altieri Sayoc.

Notable among them is a 2002 arrest by Miami police for an offense described in online records as a “threat to bomb” and “threaten to discharge destructive device.”

The online records do not provide details about the case. They show that Sayoc pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year of probation. There is also a notation about the judication being withheld.

The records show a total of eight arrests for offenses, including grand theft, battery, fraud, drug possession and multiple probation violations.

The adjudication of each of the arrests could not immediately be determined from the summary of offenses provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Sayoc appears to have pleaded no contest to some offenses. Prosecutors appear to have dropped charges in other matters.

Suspicious packages sent to CNN, Clinton, and De Niro will be analyzed at the same location

The packages that were sent to CNN, the Clintons, and actor Robert De Niro were taken to Rodman’s Neck shooting range and then to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia, this afternoon, according to John Miller, deputy commissioner for NYPD’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism.

The packages were sent “to be examined by [FBI’s] explosives people so that all the evidence from all of these incidents are in one place,” he said at a press conference Thursday.

FBI won't comment on origin of suspicious packages

FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney would not confirm the origin of the packages delivered Monday, despite reports that investigators believe some of the packages might have originated in Florida.

He stressed that investigators must be careful with sharing information with the public, and that they could not “disclose information that could adversely impact our investigation or a future prosecution.”

“Some were obviously in the postal system. I’ll leave it at that,” he said in an ongoing news conference.

Phillip Bartley, inspector in charge of the US Postal Inspection Service in New York division, said more than 600,000 postal workers were looking for the packages.

“We have the eyes and ears looking for these packages,” he said.

Ten packages have been found so far, Bartley added.

“I will say in the postal network, we have found nothing in the last eight hours,” he said.

De Blasio condemned the package as “the definition of?terrorism,” and stressed that it was important for New Yorkers to continue normal life undeterred and unintimidated.

De Blasio also urged the public to help address the political division by creating “a tone of civility, a tone of?mutual respect.”

“We shouldn’t just ask what are?the most prominent voices doing.?We also have the ask the?question are all of us treating?each other with respect,?treating men and women in law?enforcement with respect, people?in the media who report the?news, treating them with?respect,” he said.

New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill began an ongoing news conference Thursday afternoon by assuring New Yorkers that they were safe and that there are no credible threats to any individuals or organizations in the city.

He also described the current “far-reaching” investigation into the packages, saying, “I can say with certainty we?will identify and arrest a?person or people responsible for?these acts.?Make no mistake.”

Investigators believe some of the packages may have originated in Florida

Investigators believe some of the packages may have originated in Florida, according to one law enforcement official.

A second law enforcement official said federal investigators are in Florida investigating leads.

Investigators are looking into the fact that none of the bombs actually exploded (at this point)

Authorities are questioning why none of the bombs went off.?

The FBI called them “potentially destructive devices” in the press release. So either the bomb maker was good enough to ensure none would go off and never intended them to explode – or they were poorly constructed.?

However, the presence of?what is believed to be?pyrotechnic powder?is one reason why authorities consider them to be potentially destructive.

Though it appears they were handled through the postal system – jostled and moved – without any explosion, outside experts who have viewed photos of the devices have pointed to the lack of a triggering mechanism, suggesting they perhaps were never meant to explode.

The construct includes very common components, making it more difficult to get clues from the signature of the bomb. But the components could still provide clues – like the clock and the tape used.?

Device sent to CNN headed to Quantico for further testing

A bomb truck containing the CNN device is currently on the road to the FBI lab at Quantico, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation.

The FBI bomb truck left New York City around 10:30 a.m. ET, the source said.

The suspicious powder from the CNN package was tested and initially deemed not to be anthrax or known agents, the source said.?Additional testing will continue over the coming days.

Authorities are not giving credence to the reports of an image of the ISIS flag on the device, meaning they do not believe it’s international terrorism, the source said.?The image appears to be a spoof of an ISIS flag that has been widely circulated on the internet — an image that essentially parodies the ISIS flag, the source added.

Federal agencies reviewing security protocols for former officials, sources say

Various federal agencies are now reviewing security protocols involving former cabinet-level and other high-profile officials, following this week’s discovery of suspected pipe bombs sent to Obama administration officials, according to two individuals familiar with the government’s response to the investigation.

Government agencies have been proactively contacting some former officials to make sure they are aware of the ongoing pipe bomb incidents, and that they remain vigilant and report any suspicious packages to law enforcement.?

Although cabinet-level and senior agency officials do not maintain protective details after their departure from office, it is common for agency protective operations teams to maintain contact with them to help lessen any perceived threats or identity theft that might result from their high-profile posture.

Here are some of the things Trump has said about the individuals who were sent suspicious packages

The 10 suspicious packages discovered over the past few days were all sent to individuals who have been highly critical of the President — and who have been on the receiving end of some of Trump’s criticism.

Here are some comments Trump has made about the intended recipients of the bombs:

Liberal billionaire George Soros

  • Earlier this month, Trump tweeted, “The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don’t fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love! #Troublemakers.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

  • Trump faced off against Clinton in the 2016 election, where he dubbed his Democratic counterpart “Crooked Hillary,” and called for her imprisonment.

Former President Barack Obama

  • Obama has been the focus of multiple conspiracy theories that Trump has touted, including questioning the legitimacy of the former president’s birth certificate and accusing Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower.

Former CIA Director John Brennan, via CNN offices in New York ?

  • Trump has accused Brennan of conspiring with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 campaign.
  • “I hope John Brennan, the worst CIA Director in our country’s history, brings a lawsuit. It will then be very easy to get all of his records, texts, emails and documents to show not only the poor job he did, but how he was involved with the Mueller Rigged Witch Hunt. He won’t sue!” Trump wrote in a August 2018 tweet.
  • Brennan also had his security clearance revoked by the Trump administration this year.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder

  • Holder riffed on Michelle Obama’s famous line when he told an audience, “When they go low, we kick them.”
  • Trump called that comment “disgusting” and “disgraceful” in an interview with Fox News. “He better be careful what he’s wishing for,” he said. “That’s a disgusting statement for him to make.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden

  • The President has referred to Biden as “crazy” and called him “weak, both mentally and physically” in a March 2018 tweet.
  • “Crazy Joe Biden is trying to act like a tough guy. Actually, he is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault. He doesn’t know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!” Trump tweeted.

California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters

  • Trump has repeatedly criticized Waters, calling her “the unhinged FACE of the Democrat Party,” in a June 2018 tweet.
  • “Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party. She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!” Trump wrote in another tweet.

Actor Robert De Niro?

  • In response to De Niro’s criticism of Trump at the Tony Awards, Trump tweeted calling De Niro “Punchy” and said he may “truly believe he may be ‘punch-drunk.’”
  • “Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be “punch-drunk.” I guess he doesn’t … realize the economy is the best it’s ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country. Wake up Punchy!” Trump wrote in two separate tweets.

Trump believes he is being unfairly linked to bombs

President Trump believes he is being unfairly linked to the serial package bombing incidents and has no current plans to claim any personal responsibility that his rhetoric has contributed to the attempted attacks, two people who have spoken to him today said.

The President received an update on the latest incidents today. He is telling aides he is confident the authorities will find the suspect or suspects.

He has no immediate plans to call this domestic terrorism (pending investigation), a White House official said.

The President’s view today on the potential serial bomber is clear from his tweets blaming the media, which he believes is true and thinks his supporters will as well.?

White House aides are taking their cues from the President, who has shown no signs so far today of changing his approach in responding to this.?

Here’s how White House press secretary Sarah Sanders answered questions this morning:

Here's what we know about the manhunt for the bomber -- or bombers

We’ve been closely tracking the discoveries of explosive devices that were sent to a number of prominent individuals who have spoken out against President Trump, but we haven’t as heard much about the manhunt for the person or people who sent the packages.

Here are five things we know:

  1. A manhunt is underway for the perpetrator behind the packages. Law enforcement authorities are treating the series of bombs as a domestic terror matter and are advising the public to remain vigilant.
  2. The motive is unknown, but the recipients are all prominent targets of right-wing criticism and, in many cases, of Trump himself.
  3. The FBI’s counterterrorism division is leading the investigation into the packages and the agency says it’s possible additional packages were mailed to other locations.
  4. It’s being handled as a domestic terror matter, which is the assumption based on the absence of other information regarding, according to a law enforcement official.
  5. Speaking on CNN New Day, NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio said he believes there is a serial bomber out there, but it’s not clear whether the person or people are in New York or elsewhere in the country, or foreign.

Programming alert: New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill, Mayor Bill deBlasio, FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney, and other law enforcement leadership will brief the media on the latest in the package bomb investigation at NYPD Headquarters at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs peddles conspiracy theory about suspicious packages

Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs, who is prone to peddling conspiracy theories and is a prominent supporter of President Trump, asserted without evidence on Thursday that it was “fake news” that suspicious packages were mailed this week to high-profile Democrats and the New York City offices of CNN.

“Fake bombs,” Dobbs wrote in a tweet posted to his verified account Thursday morning. “Who could possibly benefit by so much fakery?”

Dobbs deleted his tweet after immediate and widespread condemnation. Authorities have said that the bombs found in the packages were rudimentary, but functional.

It was not clear if Dobbs’ tweet violated the standards of the Fox Business Network or whether he would face any disciplinary action.

Spokespeople for Fox Business did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

FBI confirms three additional packages

The FBI said in a tweet Thursday morning that it could confirm three more packages that were “similar in appearance to the others.”

This brings the total to 10 suspicious packages that have been discovered since earlier this week.

The package addressed to Robert De Niro arrived yesterday

The package addressed to Robert De Niro arrived Wednesday morning in the general mailing room, a law enforcement official tells CNN.

A retired police officer working there discovered the package yesterday, but didn’t think anything of it and left it in his office.?

After seeing news reports, he realized the package was similar to the other mail bombs and called NYPD’s 1st precinct at 4:00 a.m.

The NYPD then responded with their Emergency Services Unit units and the bomb squad.?

The package was removed around 7:00 a.m. and was never opened.

De Niro was not at the office when authorities responded this morning, according to a source with direct knowledge.

There's a second package addressed to Joe Biden

Authorities have found two packages addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden that are similar in appearance and contain potential explosive devices that appear similar to the others found, a law enforcement official said.

FBI and local partners are now responding to two scenes at Delaware post offices, according to an FBI spokesman.

Local Delaware authorities have identified the location of the two post office scenes:

  • The 1500 block of Lancaster Avenue in Wilmington, Delaware, according to Wilmington police
  • 147 Quigley Blvd. in New Castle, Delaware, according to Delaware State Police.

Soros. Clinton. Obama. Brennan. Holder. Waters. Biden. De Niro. Here's who the packages were sent to.

So far, 10 suspicious packages – each with possible explosive devices inside – have been located by authorities. Here’s what we know about the eight targets:

  • George Soros: The package found Monday and appeared to be an explosive device. There was a controlled detonation; the device is secured and remains in New York.
  • Hillary Clinton: ?The package was addressed to Clinton residence in Chappaqua, New York, and intercepted Tuesday night by the Secret Service during routine mail inspection
  • Barack Obama: The package was intercepted in Washington, D.C., during routine mail screening procedures, the Secret Service said.
  • John Brennan (sent to CNN offices): The “live explosive device” was delivered by courier to CNN’s offices in New York. The NYPD said an envelope containing white powder also was found as part of the device’s original packaging.
  • Eric Holder (found at Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s office): The package was addressed to the former attorney general, but sent to the Florida office of Schultz, whose return address was on the package.
  • Rep. Maxine Waters: One package was sent to the Democratic congresswoman’s office in DC and a second package addressed to her was found at a postal facility in Los Angeles. It matches the description of those sent to the other officials.
  • Joe Biden: The FBI says two packages were found in Delaware addressed to former Vice President Joseph Biden.
  • Robert De Niro: The package has markings similar to the pipe bomb packages recently mailed nationwide to top Democrats, sources said.

This map shows the locations of the packages. (Note that the second package for Waters was found in California.)

Sarah Sanders defends President Trump's criticism of media outside White House

Speaking with reporters on Thursday morning, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders defended President Trump’s criticism of the media in the wake of the explosive packages that were mailed to CNN and some of his critics.

“The President has condemned violence in all forms, has done that since Day 1, will continue to do that. But certainly feels that everyone has a role to play,” Sanders said.

When asked by CNN’s Abby Phillip about whether he regrets calling political opponents “evil,” Sanders said that Trump feels “we should call out despicable acts, which is exactly what he has done over the last 24 hours.”

When pressed about whether the term “evil” was appropriate, Sanders lashed out at CNN: “It’s a word people have used on your network a number of times, not only to describe the President but many people that work in this administration.”

“You guys continue to focus only on the negative. There is a role to play,” she continued. “Yesterday, the very first thing that the President did was come out and condemn the violence. The very first thing your network did was come out and accuse the President of being responsible for it. That is not okay. The first thing should have been to condemn the violence.”

But that’s not true: “That’s not the first thing we did as this happened. We reported the news, in fact,” CNN’s Jim Sciutto just said on air – Sciutto and Poppy Harlow covered the story live on air after CNN evacuated its newsroom when a bomb was found in the mailroom downstairs.

How to spot a suspicious package

Despite today’s news, mail bombs are incredibly?rare.

The US Postal Inspection Service processes more than 170 billion pieces of mail every year, and only a tiny fraction of those – just 16 over the last few years – were investigated as mail bombs.

That works out to an?average of less than 1 in 10 billion.

Here are some of the tell-tale signs of a suspicious package.

If you come across a suspicious package, here are some tips for what to do next,?according to the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Leave the package alone, clear the area and contact emergency personnel.
  • Wash your hands and other exposed skin with soap and water.
  • Cordon off the immediate area, and shut down all equipment there.
  • If possible, and without disturbing the mail, jot down what you can about the package (what it looks like, markings, the name and address on it).

If you observe any suspicious activity that requires an immediate response, please call 911 or contact your local law enforcement.

Soros' son: Staff member "recognized the threat"

The son of billionaire George Soros wrote in a New York Times op-ed Wednesday that an “alert member” of staff “recognized the threat” of a suspicious package at their suburban New York home Monday afternoon and called police, who safely detonated the device.

“We are all grateful that no one was injured, and grateful to those who kept us safe. But the incident was profoundly disturbing — as a threat not just to the safety of our family, neighbors, colleagues and friends, but also to the future of American democracy,” Alexander Soros wrote.

Soros went on to say that his father, a Holocaust survivor whose philanthropic work is admittedly “political,” has long faced anti-Semitic attacks, but noted “something changed in 2016.”

“With Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, things got worse,” he wrote. “A genie was let out of the bottle, which may take generations to put back in, and it wasn’t confined to the United States.”

“Now we have attempted bomb attacks. While the responsibility lies with the individual or individuals who sent these lethal devices to my family home and Mr. Obama’s and Ms. Clinton’s offices, I cannot see it divorced from the new normal of political demonization that plagues us today,” Soros wrote.
