“Shopping for a rug can feel overwhelming with so many options, but Wayfair’s advanced filtering capabilities make it easier by allowing you to narrow down your choices quickly,” says Melissa Kanfi, owner and principal interior designer at Olive & Neon. Plus, if you need a bit of flexibility to experiment with the perfect rug, Wayfair’s easy return policy is as fair as it gets.
We tapped design pros to find out exactly what to look for in the perfect Wayfair rug and which options to shop to create a look plucked straight out of an interior design magazine.
Wayfair area rugs
Boasting an unfussy lived-in look, this low-maintenance rug elevates any space. “I like this rug because it’s made [of] polyester and has a low pile, so it has great cleanability for my clients with children or pets,” Kanfi says. “The rug pattern in a distressed finish gives a vintage vibe and is perfect for a space with a neutral color palette.”
The best part of this beauty, according to Kimberly Morris, founder and principal designer at Kimberly Morris Interiors, is its ability to get better with age. “If you’re more into traditional oriental rugs, this gorgeous moody option is super on-trend,” she says. “With time, this one will wear beautifully to be more muted in tone.”
Merging a vintage and modern aesthetic with a pile height on the lower end, this area rug is a strong pick nearly anywhere in your home. “Super comfortable and lightweight, this area rug is a stylish choice for under your living room coffee table or sofa,” says Audrey Scheck, interior designer and founder of Audrey Scheck Design. “The beautiful shades of blue, green and taupe brown make it easy to layer with other textiles and colors. Whether you’re aiming for a vintage or modern look, it's the perfect foundation for a variety of spaces.”
While anything checkered has long been considered a timeless choice, the pattern is currently undergoing a serious resurgence, especially in subtle muted tones. “This rug is great if you’re looking for a more visible pattern and prefer to stick to natural materials while still staying in a neutral color scheme,” Kanfi says.
Boasting an all-over floral pattern in a neutral hue, this designer-approved rug can work in virtually any space. “I love this rug for a budget-friendly, neutral option,” Morris says. “It can go with so many styles and color schemes, and it’s one of the most affordable hand-knotted wool rugs I think you’ll find.”?
Infuse a cozy cabin vibe into your space with this designer-favorite find. “The plaid pattern and multicolored palette make this rug a timeless choice for a variety of spaces,” Scheck says. “Its versatile design allows for layering of textures and materials, making it easy to pair with throw blankets, pillows and other fabrics that add to its charm.”
Wayfair runners
For an even subtler take on the checkered look, steal this designer-forward pick available in three runner sizes. “I imagine this wool and jute rug working well in an organic modern aesthetic, but [it] could also pair well with a transitional style setting,” Kanfi says. “I like its style versatility.”
Scheck recommends pairing this rug with wooden accents to complement its rich colors. “This vintage-inspired runner is an excellent choice for your kitchen, bathroom or hallway,” Scheck says. “Its soft material and cross-woven texture give it personality and depth.”
Wayfair outdoor rugs
Like a throw blanket for your patio, this outdoor rug that’s equally suitable for indoor spaces creates an environment you can’t help but want to gather around. It boasts a timeless and inviting plaid motif along with a stain-resistant recycled material in a low pile height.
Your outdoor space is naturally bound to attract lots of dirt and debris. Follow Kanfi’s lead and opt for a busy pattern to conceal whatever Mother Nature decides to throw your way. While this rug is built to withstand the test of ultraviolet rays, it comes in a weathered black-and-ivory colorway for an intentionally worn-in look.
Borrow beautiful hues from the great outdoors with this outdoor rug bursting with earth tones and a Southwestern-inspired geometric design. It has a low 0.3-inch pile height in a flat-weave polypropylene material, and is ideal for large gatherings.
The addition of fade-proof Sunbrella technology ensures this rug stays pigmented for years to come — even under the sun's rays and in inclement weather. It comes in multiple runner and area rug sizes to deck out any outdoor space.
Wayfair bathroom rugs
When you’re freezing and sopping wet fresh out of the shower, your main goal is to sink your feet into this high-pile bathroom rug. Boasting 1.6 inches of thick polyester, a nonslip backing for support and a machine-washable construction, it beats stepping on the cold tile any day.
As per Kanfi, cotton is a breeze to clean, which is what you want in a bathroom setting around bodily fluids. This bath rug made of 100% cotton is available in numerous on-trend colors from Celery to a neutral Linen; it also comes in two sizes. Its geometric trim adds visual interest and absorbent properties.
Bath rugs made of chenille are popular for a reason: It's absorbent, comfortable and adds warmth to an otherwise sterile space. Grab this unique option featuring multiple pile heights as a no-fuss bathroom rug to absorb moisture while you groom or towel off.
This cotton bath rug is worth it for its pretty scalloped edges alone. Featuring a unique circular shape, which we don’t often see in a bath rug, this option will sit beautifully in front of a vanity or claw-foot tub, adding depth and dimension to a vast ensuite bathroom.
Wayfair kitchen rugs
Boasting a low pile for a high-traffic area, this nonskid kitchen mat is as pretty as it is practical while you pivot around the kitchen preparing for guests to arrive. Sweetening the deal even more is how it comes in a pack of three, allowing you to customize your coverage around your kitchen.
Amalfi Coast-inspired lemons are one of the most upbeat and stylish ways to enliven your space, so use your kitchen rug to get in on the trend. Like a foam-infused sneaker, this anti-fatigue kitchen mat helps absorb impact on your joints when you’re standing in front of the stove or counter for hours at a time.
Not everything needs to be a “moment,” and your kitchen rug is a testament to this. Serving as a visual extension of, say, your hardwood flooring or neutral-hued tile, this nonskid kitchen mat is a utilitarian and practical way to protect your kitchen floors from spills and scuffs while keeping your feet cozy.
What to look for in a Wayfair rug
Budget and size
Kanfi first recommends narrowing down your search using two primary filters: size and budget. “Wayfair allows you to filter by price range, which helps you stay within budget, and by specific dimensions so you can hone in on rugs that fit your room perfectly,” she says. “A well-fitting rug is essential for tying together the look of your space.”
Material
You also need to find the right material for your household’s needs. Morris sings the praises of Wayfair’s unmatched hand-knotted wool rug selection, many of which are often available for unbeatable prices.
“I always suggest hand-knotted wool rugs if your budget allows, as they will truly last for decades,” she says. “Wool is natural, durable and resilient, and it can withstand spills and heavy wear better than most synthetic fibers.” She adds that hand-knotted wool rugs also tend to be free of synthetic glues or adhesives, which makes them better for pets and little ones.
If wool isn’t in your budget or doesn’t make sense for your lifestyle, Kanfi also recommends going for cotton. While she says it’s less durable than wool, it’s lighter in weight and easy to clean. Synthetic fibers, on the other hand, will give you that durability for high-traffic areas, and they tend to be stain-resistant and more affordable, she says. And while eco-friendly materials like jute or sisal create a stunning natural and textured boho look, they’re best for low-traffic areas since they’re less durable with heavy wear, Kanfi adds.
Color and pattern
While you’re welcome to go bold in smaller accents around your home, Scheck recommends playing it safe with soft muted shades like beige or taupe for your rugs, “which can introduce warmth into a space.” (Just be prepared for lighter shades to show stains more easily.) Scheck says darker neutrals like rusty tobacco or Bordeaux can be styled beautifully in various settings.
Patterns — whether classic or vintage-inspired — blend seamlessly with other elements and provide depth throughout the room, according to Scheck. Ultimately, said patterns shouldn’t exist in a vacuum but should instead complement your existing furniture and decor, Kanfi says.
Pile height
“The height of the rug pile impacts both comfort and practicality,” Kanf saysi. She suggest grabbing a low-pile rug of a quarter inch or less for high-traffic areas like a living room, kitchen, hallway or staircase.
Softer underfoot, a medium-pile height of up to half an inch works best for living rooms and bedrooms where comfort reigns supreme. Rugs with a half-inch pile or higher might be plush and cozy, but she says they’re harder to maintain. High-pile rugs at about an inch and above are ideal as accents in bedrooms and other low-traffic areas —?and they double as slippers for the ultimate luxurious sensory experience.
