If you’re not in love with your backyard or outdoor patio furniture, you deserve an upgrade. Most interior designers will tell you the same key thing: Your outdoor space should be treated as an extension of your home and living space, not a separate entity you don’t think about until summer arrives.
“Creating an outdoor living space is such a special opportunity to design a haven that feels like your own personal retreat,” says Olma Fuentes, founder and principal designer of?Deni + Dove Interiors. “It’s a great return on investment because a well-designed outdoor area serves so many purposes, from hosting friend and family gatherings to helping you unwind and even connecting you with nature.”
It’s no secret that shopping for outdoor furniture and decor can be pricey and hard to navigate, and while we love the looks of designer brands, they’re not exactly affordable. But there’s no need to sacrifice style for budget. So, we tapped interior designers on how to find the best outdoor furniture from Wayfair, along with their favorite pieces from the retailer, to transform your outdoor space into an oasis without the steep price tag.
How to make the most of shopping at Wayfair
Narrow down what you’re looking for first.?This is a crucial preparation step. “Before going on the site and looking at everything available, I would suggest thinking about how you plan on using your space, the specific items you think you’ll need, the aesthetic you’re going for, how much you plan on spending and then go from there,” Fuentes says.
Use its filters.?Wayfair may seem like an endless maze of furniture and decor, but it actually has a comprehensive filter system to help you find exactly what you want — that’s why it’s key to know what you’re looking for before you start shopping. As interior designer Anne Sage says, the filters “let you get quite granular and sort by size, material, style, color, pretty much every variable you can imagine.” Jodi Peterman, CEO and owner of?Elizabeth Erin Designs, suggests filtering by customer ratings as well.?As an interior designer myself, I use these filters pretty much daily when shopping for clients, especially when I need something to fit a specific set of dimensions.
Check out its sister sites and specific brands for a more tailored experience.?Wayfair has “many different specialty brands that have their own distinct style, so you can shop a more curated selection that’s edited according to your aesthetic,” Sage says. “Check out?AllModern?and?Cane-line?for contemporary outdoor pieces, or?Joss & Main?and?Summer Classics?for a more traditional vibe.” Designer?Angela Belt echoes this idea but takes it one step further. Not only does Wayfair have tons of brands to shop from but it has sister sites for its own in-house brands like?AllModern,?Joss & Main?and more. That’s why Belt likes to go directly to those brands instead of taking on Wayfair itself. “I often visit their sister site AllModern,” she says. “The collection is well curated with a ton of appetizing photography, so I usually find what I want pretty quickly.”
Read the reviews and look at customer photos.?One thing every designer agreed on? The reviews are your best friend. And at Wayfair, there are plenty of reviews (with real-life pictures!) to come by. “People aren’t shy about raising red flags if an item is difficult to assemble or if the color looks different in person,” Sage says. “And conversely, Wayfair customers seem to be good about reporting positive experiences too!” Peterman specifically suggests combing through reviews for details on durability, comfort and the quality of the products in-person, as well as information on the assembly process so you’re prepared for how much setup your new pieces require — and avoid products with common issues. Good or bad, it’s “extremely helpful [to see] what customers are experiencing,” says Rasheeda Gray, interior designer and owner of?Gray Space Interiors. And remember, reviews aren’t necessarily the be-all and end-all when you’re shopping, but as Sage says, “They can be helpful in tipping the scale if you’re on the fence about a decision.”
One key thing to consider no matter where you’re shopping for outdoor furniture is your local climate since that can impact the materials you choose and how they function, Sage says. “A wrought-iron dining table and chairs set that suits a home in the cloudy, humid Northeast would be blazingly hot and totally useless in a desert climate where poly lumber is a more appropriate choice,” she says.

Best outdoor couches, sofas and chairs
“This sofa has a very high-end appearance and the overall colors and aesthetics will work with a number of different styles,” Fuentes says. Weather-resistant cushions top off this L-shaped, teakwood sectional, making it the ideal cozy spot for your backyard.

This stylish, oval-shaped pick from Belt is made of manufactured wood and iron, so it’s probably best for more covered outdoor areas, but it definitely makes a statement. I’m of the opinion that the cozier the chaise, the better, so this double chaise lounge is a must if you have the space. Wheels make this one easy to move around as needed.

The curved solid wood frame of these lounges makes its own style statement, and this pair comes with a coordinating side table too — perfect for holding your drinks and your latest summer read. Best outdoor dining tables and sets
For those with smaller spaces or anyone trying to create a more intimate outdoor dining area, check out this pick from Fuentes. “This is a great bistro set for when you’re looking for a more private, quiet moment for reading or dining with another guest. It has a very light and airy feel, but is heavy enough to withstand the wind, and all the materials used are ideal for outdoor use,” Fuentes says.
